City Uprising 2011: March 14-March 17

City Uprising is happening in less than two weeks.

What is City Uprising?

Inspired by Jeremiah 33:9, City Uprising seeks to propel the church and prosper the city. Through an intensive worship service and service experience, City Uprising hopes to unite God's people in metropolitan communities to bring about resolute commitment to the local church, raise awareness of the need to reach the world's major cities with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by building new churches and building a bridge into the heart of the city through love and service.

We believe the city is the launching pad for the gospel. City Uprising is a mobilization piece of SendNYC, a church planting vehicle, equipping and connecting sending churches with church planters. For the first time in history, more people live in urban cities than in rural. If this growth continues, 60% of the American population will live in major cities by 2040. We believe the Church should take notice and move with the trend, bringing people to the city to show the glory of God. City Uprising is a tangible way to show communities service and meet the most immediate needs in restoration, healthcare, and spirituality.

City Uprising was birthed out of the Gallery Church in New York City and has expanded to other mega cities, both nationally and internationally. If you are interested in hosting your own City Uprising event, please see the "Your City" page.

Occurring in several cities, City Uprising has its roots in New York City:::

The home of 170+ languages, 8.5 million people, and the birthplace of City Uprising, New York City Uprising is the ultimate mission experience. With worship and teaching designed to compliment service projects. Past participants have been a part of record breaking HIV testings and working with government agencies to restore community spaces. Those registered can look forward to working with local New Yorkers, creating art, and engaging in life changing conversations during the day.

It's not happening until March, but you might want to mark your calendar now for City Uprising. What is City Uprising?

Inspired by Jeremiah 33:9, City Uprising seeks to propel the church and prosper the city. Through an intensive worship service and service experience, City Uprising hopes to unite God's people in metropolitan communities to bring about resolute commitment to the local church, raise awareness of the need to reach the world's major cities with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by building new churches and building a bridge into the heart of the city through love and service.

We believe the city is the launching pad for the gospel. City Uprising is a mobilization piece of SendNYC, a church planting vehicle, equipping and connecting sending churches with church planters. For the first time in history, more people live in urban cities than in rural. If this growth continues, 60% of the American population will live in major cities by 2040. We believe the Church should take notice and move with the trend, bringing people to the city to show the glory of God. City Uprising is a tangible way to show communities service and meet the most immediate needs in restoration, healthcare, and spirituality.

Selling Yourself without Selling Out: Part 1

Self-promotion. It sounds like such a dirty word. Is it sinful to promote yourself? Is it selling out to want to earn a living off of your art? Or, is promotion a critical component of a successful arts career? Redeemer Presbyterian Church's Center for Faith & Work in New York City broached this sticky subject in Selling Yourself without Selling Out: An Introduction to Marketing and Promotion. Led by Luann Jennings, the artists' professional development workshop, held on Friday, July 23, 2010, used Scripture, anecdote, guest speakers musician Melanie Penn and photographer Steve Williams, and Q&A to address the concerns many Christian artists have about self-promotion.

When asked what the hardest thing about promoting one's art--be it visual art, dance, music, acting, literary, etc.--the crowd shouted out a machine-gun round of answers: We're afraid of sounding cocky. We don't want to be prideful. We feel like we're manipulating people. We don't want to hound people. Our work is not quite ready yet (... and might never be because we're perfectionists). We don't value ourselves--or our product--to market ourselves. We don't want to sound desperate. We're afraid of rejection. We think it's unChristian to self-promote.

Being an artist and a Christian can feel like a bit like a double whammy--no, a triple whammy. As artists we're repeatedly, lovingly cautioned to have something "practical" to fall back on in case--though implied: when--our arts careers fail. In direct correlation to that, "most of us when training to be artists didn't learn about how to make a career out of it," said Jennings, who comes from a theater background. In other words, we have the technical skill and knowledge of how to create our art, but not the practical, business savvy of how to get our art into the world. The third corollary, though, is that even artists that possess a sense of marketing and promotion feel uncomfortable actually implementing it because we don't think it's Christian to promote our work.

As Christians we've been told: be humble; put others ahead of ourselves. We see this in the NIV translation of Philippians 2:3-4, which says:

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

However, when we look at The Message translation of the same verse, it reads:

Don't push your way to the front; don't sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don't be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

Both translations of Philippians 2:3-4 say the same thing, but The Message translation perhaps makes it clearer that ambition isn't necessarily negative but that we shouldn't let ambition cause us to sin. Our ambition shouldn't be "selfish ambition." We shouldn't step on other people or "sweet-talk" to get ahead. Rather, and this is where a Christian perspective perhaps differs from a more worldly perspective, we should help other people in their endeavors as well.

The PowerPoint presentation slid to a Bible verse: "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. --2 Timothy 1:7." It turns out there's a difference between humility and timidity. Humility is grounded in a reality that we are not superior to anyone, while timidity is rooted in fear.

"It's not arrogant to tell someone I can do this [job or creative work] better than anyone else," Jennings said; "It's loving." The obvious implication is that if we love our clients, we will give them an honest assessment of how our art can benefit them. "Some of us are going to be right for certain needs," said Jennings, "and some of us are not."

New York Is for Christian Hipsters

New York makes a lot of top 10 lists. Apparently -- or at least according to Brett McCracken (McCracken: what a great name!) over at conversant life -- it's even one of the top 10 cities for Christian hipsters:

As it is for any other hipster, New York is the dream destination for many Christian hipsters. Whether they go there to be actors, artists, designers, or factory workers, hipsters love living in New York. Currently, it’s the city where many Christian hipster icons (such as Sufjan Stevens, Welcome Wagon, and Jay Bakker) reside. It’s also the site of dozens of very hip, urbane, trend-setting churches like Redeemer Presbyterian, All Angels Episcopal, and Journey, as well as ministries such as the International Arts Movement.

I can't help but recall an episode of That 70s Show when the always tipsy mom, Kitty, called New York "Sodom and Gomorrah with a subway." New York has so often been thought of as a breeding ground for sin. And yet, for centuries, it's also been considered the place for great art, music, and fashion. No other city in the U.S. compares to it. So, it makes sense that, religion aside, you'd be drawn to NYC if you're a creative type.

There are indeed more and more young and creative communities for Christians in New York. (McCracken, who's writing a book on the world's hippest churches, also lists Resurrection Presbyterian as a hipster church in a separate post. I'd add Trinity Grace's Chelsea service and North Brooklyn Vineyard's Trash Bar service to the list above.) But does that make New York Christian-friendly?

Why Does God Allow Tragedy?

Okay, so here's a question that often backs us into the corner: Why does God allow tragedy? We heard it with Katrina, and now we're hearing it again with Haiti. People -- Christians and nonChristians alike -- want to know why if God is so good He would allow bad things -- terrible, devastating things -- to happen to good people. If God loves us, wouldn't He protect us? If God is all-powerful, wouldn't He stop natural disasters? Socrates in the City is never one to shy away from the big questions. Believing that "the unexamined life is not worth living," Socrates tackles the questions that are on people's hearts and minds. Later this month, they're bringing in MIT physicist and author Dr. Gerald Schroeder, Ph.D., to wrestle with the very question of why God allows tragedy to occur:

Dr. Gerald Schroeder, Ph.D., is a scientist, author, and lecturer, who focuses on what he perceives to be an inherent relationship between science and spirituality.

In 1965, Schroeder received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in nuclear physics and earth and planetary sciences. He worked five years on the staff of the MIT physics department. After emigrating to Israel in 1971, he was employed as a researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Volcani Research Institute, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His Doctorate was in two science fields, Earth sciences and physics. He teaches at Aish HaTorah College of Jewish Studies.

He professes Orthodox Judaism, and his works frequently cite Talmudic, Midrashic and medieval commentaries on Biblical creation accounts, such as commentaries written by the Jewish philosopher Nachmanides. Among other things, Schroeder attempts to reconcile a young earth creationism Biblical view with the scientific model of a world that is billions of years old using the idea that the perceived flow of time for a given event in an expanding universe varies with the observer’s perspective of that event. He attempts to reconcile the two perspectives numerically, calculating the effect of the stretching of space-time, based on Einstein's theory of general relativity. Schroeder holds to a theistic evolution view.

It will take place every 2nd Thursday and feature Fair Trade Coffee and Tea as well as light snacks. Mugs can be stored at the church if you wish to leave them here for the next month.

The good thing about The Journey's play group to the movies is that afterward, if you like the people enough and are feeling brave enough to make conversation, you can go out with them to eat BBQ. Melody of the Dragon is a New York-based not-for-profit ensemble that was founded in 1998. The Chinese ensemble utilizes both classical and folk music as well as contemporary music. In addition to the dizi, mentioned about, Melody of Dragon also features the yangqin, which is a hammered dulcimer; an erhu, a two-stringed fiddle; and a guqin, a seven-stringed zither.

Join us as we begin begin a tribute to American Master Thomas A. Dorsey, blues pioneer and “Father of Gospel Music.”

An interactive workshop, to be led by vocalist, music historian, and lecturer Tami Tyree, will highlight many aspects of his life and music. Ms. Tyree, a member of Riverside and longtime soloist of its Inspirational Choir, is founder and facilitator of Echoes of our Ancestors. Wycliffe Gordon, world-class trombonist and composer, will perform at the workshop.

The workshop is free, but space is limited. Registration is required to receive instructional materials for this course. Please call the Education office at 212.870.6833 to reserve a space. The deadline for registration is February 1.

The tribute to Mr. Dorsey will climax with a concert on Sunday, February 21 at 3:30 p.m. featuring Ms. Tyree and guest artists.

The current devotional is entitled "God the Designer," based on 1 Chronicles 28, and asks such questions as, "How could a commitment to beauty impact a Christian’s life and journey of faith?"

You pass them every day, yet how often do you stop and feed and clothe the homeless? The Rescue Alliance is once again putting on Don't Walk By, a month-long campaign to reach out and help the less fortunate:

The Rescue Alliance is a partnership of faith-based ministries that are focused on offering homeless men,women and children an alternative to living on the streets.

In January of 2010 an army of hundreds of volunteers will fan out across Manhattan to offer every single street person food, blankets, but most importantly a complete “holistic residential recovery program that offers them new life in Christ” and educational, vocational and housing solutions.

Our goal is to educate and mobilize New Yorkers of faith to compassionately engage homeless men, women and children throughout the city.

Our Vision

Through an alliance of influencers, volunteers, outreach experts and resource providers, see that every man and woman living on Manhattan’s streets is offered a chance to see their life transformed.

Our Mission

In response to Christ’s teaching in the parable of the Good Samaritan, we are mobilizing 1,000 volunteers, led by trained professionals, in a massive outreach to every street homeless man and woman in New York City in January 2010.

These volunteers will compassionately share Christ, and provide food, blankets and other needs. For those ready to leave the streets, we offer a place in a residential recovery program featuring a Christian discipleship curriculum composed of one-on-one counseling, career and educational training and Christian growth.

The Rescue Alliance is a partnership of faith-based ministries that are focused on offering homeless men,women and children an alternative to living on the streets.

In January of 2010 an army of hundreds of volunteers will fan out across Manhattan to offer every single street person food, blankets, but most importantly a complete “holistic residential recovery program that offers them new life in Christ” and educational, vocational and housing solutions.

Our goal is to educate and mobilize New Yorkers of faith to compassionately engage homeless men, women and children throughout the city.

Our Vision

Through an alliance of influencers, volunteers, outreach experts and resource providers, see that every man and woman living on Manhattan’s streets is offered a chance to see their life transformed.

Our Mission

In response to Christ’s teaching in the parable of the Good Samaritan, we are mobilizing 1,000 volunteers, led by trained professionals, in a massive outreach to every street homeless man and woman in New York City in January 2010.

These volunteers will compassionately share Christ, and provide food, blankets and other needs. For those ready to leave the streets, we offer a place in a residential recovery program featuring a Christian discipleship curriculum composed of one-on-one counseling, career and educational training and Christian growth.

Redeemer is about as close to a megachurch as New York gets, so it can be pretty challenging to meet people -- and find them again the next Sunday -- at Redeemer. citilights provides an opportunity to have dinner with small groups of people:

Sunday, January 10 we'll take small groups of people to restaurants near Redeemer for fellowship and food. It could be a great way to find a fellowship group. Meals are held following the 10:30AM and 5:00PM services only. Look for the citilights sign in the Hunter College lobby, or by the citilights sign in the sanctuary.
